The field of animal genetic engineering includes numerous areas of biopharmaceuticals, such as development of food resources, disease prevention and environmental conservation, all of which contribute towards the promotion of welfare for the mankind. Transgenic animal produced by the combined technology of animal genetic engineering has been used in various research areas such as disease resistance, improved economic transformation, development of biologically active substances, drug production • validation and gene regulation studies. Also it is an important asset that can promote the future development of applied sciences. Our laboratory is using avian as a research model to lead the animal biotechnology area.

Before the development of experimental methods using mammals, avian species were used as an effective model for neurobiology and embryology research. In addition, using avian as a model animal has advantages that can solve a lot of problems that could not be solved using the mammals as experimental models. Recently, the technology of transgenic avian species production is being used for diverse purposes, from the traditional embryology field to the recent molecular genetics. Usage of avian species as a bioreactor and animal model production, using avian stem cells for the production of “Gene chimera animal”, functional materials mediated by avian eggs, the production of food drugs and its purification technological development and competition are becoming increasingly fierce. Especially, the recent spreading of avian flu and avian originated epidemic zoonosis diffusion focused the society’s attention towards various diseases and the development of immune-therapeutics. Particularly, chickens are the next species to be analyzed after the whole genome sequencing of the human DNA. Based on this, in the area of genes and transcript, the researches aiming to find functional genes have been actively implemented.

The Lab of Animal Genetic Engineering, utilizing the advantages of an avian animal model to produce efficient transgenic birds systems, has focused on research capacity in the development field for establishing animal bioreactors, useful genetic and functional materials excavated, restoration of endangered birds and avian stem cell development. In 2015, we were selected as the Avian Germ Cell Control and Reproduction Research Group in the Leader researcher Support Project (Creative Research). Therefore we can pioneer the creative field of study that can only be achieved with high-end technology in avian germ cell manipulation, and produce meaningful results, which is futuristic, industrial and high level in social value.
